Center Wide Storage

The new Center Wide Storage is delivered by DDN and consists of approximately 3PB storage on spinning disks and ~200TB of NVMe (flash based storage). NVMe is used for metadata and to speed up access to active data. As previously we will be running a Lustre file system on the new storage.

The system is called Ransarn, but we generally refer to this system as ' center wide storage' or '/pfs' on our webpage. It is available on all our clusters. Your home directory and your project storage are both on this system. Remember that only your home directory (and directories under it) is backed up. Your project storage has NO BACKUP. In case the file system gets full, files that have been unused for some time might get deleted without warning, and in the (very rare) event that the system crashes and loses files, these files may not be recoverable.

Our new center storage was taken into production in November 2020.

We have a page with more information about our filesystems.

Tape Storage

Kryten - Hardware

  • IBM TS4500 tape library
  • Six IBM TS1155 tape drives capable of storing 15TB uncompressed data per tape at the transfer speed of 360MB/s
  • One L25 library manager rack housing tapes, tape drives and control equipment
  • Two S25 storage racks housing tapes
  • A capacity of 2500 tape slots

Software

Backup and long term storage data for various NAISS projects and resources are stored in the tape library. It's also used for long term storage of data in the WLCG project.

WLCG Storage

The Worldwide LHC Computing Grid (WLCG) is a global collaboration of computer centres. It was launched in 2002 to provide a resource to store, distribute and analyse the 15 petabytes (15 million gigabytes) of data generated every year by the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

The Nordic Data Grid Facility (NDGF) is Tier-1 site for WLCG, with storage capacity and support for the Grid. HPC2N is a Tier-1 node, providing storage (dCache Pools) and computing services.

Swestore

Swestore is Research Data Storage Infrastructure operated by the National Academic Infrastructure for Supercomputing in Sweden (NAISS).

The resources provided by Swestore are made available through open procedures such that the best Swedish research is supported and new research is facilitated. The purpose of Swestore allocations, granted by Swedish National Allocations Committee (SNAC), is to provide large scale data storage for “live” or “working” research data, also known as active research data. See docs.swestore.se for more information.
